The battle for supremacy at the top of the Division 2 standings saw more twists and turns play out this past weekend (August 8-9) as the British Truck Racing Championship took centre stage at Donington Park.
On what proved to be a pivotal visit to the East Midlands circuit, title combatants Callum Eason and Jake Evans endured contrasting fortunes as they continued their respective pursuits of title glory.
Qualifying kicked off official proceedings on Saturday morning and it was Evans that came out of the traps fastest as he snared pole position for races one and two by two tenths of a second ahead of Bradley Harvey.
Harvey had been the initial pace-setter but a late surge from Evans in his MAN TGX ensured that he claimed the bragging rights. Both he and Eason would then endure issues, with mechanical gremlins limiting their track time.
Unfortunately for Evans, that would be as good as it would get for the day with the aforementioned issues – specifically linked to his engine – seeing him go from first to sixth in race one. He then failed to make the start altogether for race two.
In his absence, Eason came to the fore to convert two mighty drives into a pair of race wins. Behind him, podiums also went the way of Harvey, former champion John Powell and Simon Cole.
Sublime work from the Jake Evans Trucksport crew overnight ensured that the reigning champion could make the start for race three on Sunday night and things originally looked positive as the Staffordshire racer sat inside the top three positions.
However, like the day previous it wasn’t long before issues arose and with a handful of laps remaining, the talented racer was forced to pull to the side of the track and retire. That would sadly be his last appearance of the weekend.
Unaffected by the travails of his main championship rival, Eason stuck to the job in hand for the remainder of that race and the day as a whole as he swept his way to two more race wins ahead of the likes of Harvey and Powell.
Those triumphs ensured that he not only extended his current winning streak to nine races, but he also built up a healthy advantage at the top of the Drivers’ Championship.
Next up for the British Truck Racing Championship is the annual pilgrimage to mainland Europe, as the world-famous Le Mans circuit in France stages the penultimate event of the season on September 26-27.
